The Math of Revenge Trading (You Won't Like It)
A single revenge sequence — three trades, sized 1.5×, no plan — has a higher expected loss than a full week of normal trading. The math is brutal once you actually run it.
- ✓You already know your rules—the breakdown happens in live execution when emotions surge.
- ✓Post-trade tagging acts as an autopsy; live systematic friction stops the impulsive click.
- ✓Compounding an edge requires capping daily losses with deterministic, pre-authored guardrails.
A toy example
Take a trader with a clean 55% win rate, 1R risk, 1.2R average winner. On 20 trades a month at $100 risk, that's roughly +$240 expected.
Now insert one bad day per week: three trades sized 1.5R after a stop-out, win rate collapses to 35% because none of them are plan setups. Each bad day is roughly −$240 expected. Four bad days a month = −$960.
Net month: −$720 with a strategy that was supposed to print $240.
Why it's worse in real life
The toy numbers above assume you stop after three revenge trades. You don't. The same emotional state that produced the first revenge trade produces the fifth. Sizing creeps up. Stops get widened. By the end of the day the loss isn't 3R — it's 8R.
The intervention that works
The only intervention that has ever broken this in research is a pause between the trigger and the action. Wingman exists to be that pause. Not a guilt trip, not a graph — just five forced seconds between the loss and the next click.
The Revenge Trading & Ruin Expectancy Simulator
Simulate what happens when 1 planned loss spirals into off-playbook revenge entries.
Most tilted traders increase sizing by 1.5x–3x to "make it back in one move."
In just 18 minutes of unbuffered trading, you erased approximately 14 days of systematic, edge-driven trading progress.
