How to Calculate Position Size in Trading

Proper position sizing is the core mathematical foundation of survival in financial markets. Most retail traders blow trading accounts not because their entry timing is inaccurate, but because they size arbitrarily. If you risk 5% on one trade and 0.5% on the next, your winning trades cannot mathematically compound against your losses.

Position Size (Units) = [Account Balance × (Risk % ÷ 100)] ÷ (Entry Price - Stop Loss)

The 3 Position Sizing Mistakes That Blow Trading Accounts

  • Sizing Up to Recover a Loss (Martingale): Doubling position size after a loss is the fastest mathematical path to complete ruin. When in a drawdown, professional risk managers scale size down, never up.
  • Fixed Lot Sizing Regardless of Stop Distance: Trading 100 shares on a 50-cent stop represents half the monetary risk of 100 shares on a $1.00 stop. Always normalize your monetary risk per trade.
  • Ignoring Prop Firm Daily Loss Limits: If your prop account has a $1,000 maximum daily loss limit, calculating risk off the $50,000 balance instead of the remaining daily buffer will fail your challenge in one trade.
