FTMO Drawdown Rules, Buffer Calculations & Discipline Protocol

FTMO is one of the oldest and most recognized prop trading firms in the forex and CFD space. Passing and retaining an FTMO funded account requires navigating two core risk boundaries: the 5% Maximum Daily Loss (calculated from the day-start balance or equity, whichever is higher) and the 10% Maximum Loss.

The Breach Anatomy

Why 90%+ of Traders Fail FTMO

Prop firm failure is rarely about market analysis. It is almost always a mathematical misunderstanding of how drawdown accumulates under pressure.

Breach Trap #1

Holding floating profit through midnight CE(S)T

Why it happens: Traders leave an open position with $3,000 unrealized profit overnight.

Mathematical impact: The daily loss boundary recalculates from higher equity, pulling the daily stop floor up and shrinking the room for normal pullbacks next morning.

Systematic defense: Close or trim swing positions before the midnight reset or use an FTMO Swing account.

Breach Trap #2

Revenge sizing after a 1R loss

Why it happens: A trader takes a 1% loss ($1,000 on $100k), gets agitated, doubles risk to 2% to make it back quickly, and suffers a second loss.

Mathematical impact: Within 45 minutes, 60% of the entire daily buffer is erased, leaving only $2,000 before complete account termination.

Systematic defense: Set Wingman daily trade limit to 3 trades and daily loss cutoff to 2.5% (half the FTMO limit).

Frequently Asked Questions About FTMO

Does FTMO daily drawdown calculate from equity or balance?

FTMO calculates daily drawdown based on whichever is higher between the balance and equity at 00:00:00 CE(S)T. If your equity is higher than balance due to open profits, your daily loss allowance is calculated from that higher equity figure.

Can I hold trades over the weekend on FTMO?

On FTMO Swing accounts, yes. On standard FTMO accounts, all positions must be closed before the weekend market close on Friday evening.

How does TradingJournalPro prevent an FTMO breach?

TJP allows you to set pre-trade gate rules that alert you when your session loss reaches 2.5% (half of FTMO's 5% rule). Wingman blocks emotional revenge entries before your account reaches the broker breach floor.
