Topstep End-of-Day (EOD) Drawdown Rules & Risk Guidelines

Topstep is one of the premier futures evaluation companies. Unlike firms with intraday high-water trailing thresholds, Topstep calculates its Maximum Loss Limit strictly at the end of the trading day (5:00 PM CT) based on closed account balance, giving traders room to let winning trades breathe.

The Breach Anatomy

Why 90%+ of Traders Fail Topstep

Prop firm failure is rarely about market analysis. It is almost always a mathematical misunderstanding of how drawdown accumulates under pressure.

Breach Trap #1

Pushing trades during illiquid session closes

Why it happens: Traders close to their daily target take trades between 3:45 PM and 4:10 PM CT.

Mathematical impact: Wide spreads and thin order books trigger unexpected slippage, crossing the daily loss boundary right at the market bell.

Systematic defense: Enforce a session cutoff 30 minutes before market close using TJP pre-trade rules.

Breach Trap #2

Over-leveraging the 5 contract allowance

Why it happens: Traders use all 5 contracts on the $50k account.

Mathematical impact: A 10-point stop out on ES with 5 contracts is $2,500 loss — an instant catastrophic breach of the $2,000 maximum loss limit.

Systematic defense: Set Wingman contract ceiling to 1 ES or 3 Micro contracts.

Frequently Asked Questions About Topstep

Does Topstep have a daily loss limit on funded accounts?

On Express Funded Accounts, Topstep removed the hard daily loss limit, leaving only the Maximum Loss Limit. However, having a self-imposed daily loss cap is critical to prevent losing the funded account in a single tilt session.

Does Topstep trail unrealized profits?

No. Topstep calculates trailing drawdown based on closed balance at 5:00 PM CT. Floating unrealized profits do not pull your stop threshold up during the day.

What happens if I hit the Daily Loss Limit in the Combine?

If you hit the Daily Loss Limit during the Trading Combine, your platform locks you out for the remainder of the session, but your account is not terminated. You can resume trading the next session at 5 PM CT.
